Tuesdays with Dorie: Split Level Puddings

Garrett of Flavour of Vanilla chose Dorie's Split Level Puddings this week.

My very first TWD way back in July 08 was Chocolate Pudding which we absolutely loved, so I was curious to see how this chocolate and vanilla version would compare. Unfortunately, this fell into the liked not loved category.

The vanilla layer thickened nicely on the stove but when I blitzed it in the food processor it turned into vanilla soup and never really thickened up in the fridge. Think of the photo above as an action shot, taken before all the pudding slid off the spoon!

I also didn't really get any layers. The vanilla and chocolate parts blended together resulting in some random swirlyness.

The taste test ...

Not bad, just not something I would rush to make again even though I really do enjoy creamy desserts. Am curious though. Is it the addition of cornflour that makes this a pudding as opposed to a custard? Whatever you call it, hubby loved it and it was easy to make. That gets a thumbs up from me!

Thanks Garrett. You can find the recipe on The Flavour of Vanilla.

  1. I made the espresso variation and it was delicious. But I will try the vanilla.

  3. My vanilla layer got all soupy on its last trip through the food processor, too. At least you were able to get a photo on a spoon. Mine kept sliding off!

  4. My vanilla pudding was soup too. Although your pudding looks much thicker. I thought this was good but I won't be rushing to make it again.

  5. Hmmm - I wonder why a visit to the food processor turned it to soup. Tasty soup, I'm sure, but not what you were going for.

I wouldn't go out of my way to make this again either - but it was fun and different.

  7. Glad it worked out for you. looks great.

Mine failed miserably. Too much work, too many dishes to try again, altho' I liked the flavor.

  8. I had the same thing happen with the vanilla layer. I remade the whole recipe today, using a bowl and a whisk and ended up with a perfect Split-level pudding. Skip the food processor. :)

  10. I used the whisk. Tried the food processor, but I realized I should have used the wee one instead. Ah well! I liked it, too, but not loved (like I do the cinnamon squares, for example). Glad to have tried it, though. :)
