TWD BWJ - Pizza Rustica

Well I was all set to make pizza only to discover this is not actually a pizza at all! At least not as we know it. Think of it more as a quiche but with pizza-ish fillings.

I stuck to the recipe as written so used prosciutto, pecorino and parsley in the filling. It was really easy to make and I was so looking forward to trying it.

The taste test ...

Unfortunately I didn't love this. Normally I enjoy a sweet-salty combination but the crust here was just too sweet for me and it really detracted from the overall flavour. It looked pretty but the taste just didn't win me over. The kids each had a bite then just picked off the crust and left the rest.

I can definitely see the potential though with less sugar in the crust and some veges in the filling it could be a winner.

Don't let my lukewarm reaction put you off though, hubby loved it and took leftovers for lunch the next day!

  1. Hi, your Pizza Rustica looks great!
I've added to mine some spinach, carrot and onion (previously brown) and liked it.
In 38 min it will be midnight here in Switzerland and I'll be allowed to post mine!
    All the best

  2. Your pizza looks beautiful. I wasn't crazy about the sweetness of the crust at first, but I just had the leftovers cold and I thought the sweetness worked well with the savory.

  4. I agree with you on the sweetness of the crust! I actually didn't like the combination that much and left me wishing that I hadn't put all that sugar in it. The filling was great though! Yours looks great!

  6. Interesting how differently people felt about this recipe! My husband and I were the opposites of you and your husband: I loved it and he thought it was just okay. I was a bit skeptical about the sweet crust before I tried it, but ended up liking it more than I would like a regular pie crust. In any case, your Pizza Rustica turned out really pretty :) There's just something about pies looking pretty, regardless of what they're called!

  13. I also was expecting to make an actual pizza! A slight disappointment. I thought the recipe sounded bland so I omitted the prosciutto and added spinach, roasted peppers and sweet cherry peppers - came out very tasty.

  14. I want to do it again with different fillings too :) Then I might love it instead of just like it ok... :)

  15. I agree with everything you said, but I still ate the leftovers--hate to waste good crust and cheese!

  16. Interesting to watch kids react to these recipes. My 8 and 6 year old grandkids wouldn't touch it, but the 18 month old loved it. She kept clapping her hands and saying "yay" when she wasn't stuffing it in her mouth!!!

  19. I'm with you on this one... the sweet crust really put me off. I attempted leftovers with a liberal dash of hot sauce, and even that didn't help. Ah well, what can ya do? :P

  20. My kids did the same! I noticed they picked at it and spread it around the plate so it looked like they ate more than they did! I found the filling too salty!
